Hello Little World Skypers and Global Classroom are very active in hyperspace. It was no surprise to me when Steve Sherman sent an instant message asking me to connect with his learners.

Steve Sherman ensure his learners make cross border connections, share each others culture as his students learn Mathematics in the most powerful way possible.
Graham Sharpe, Tewkesbury School, UK is another global teacher. He had a skypathon with many classrooms across the world yesterday. He too connected with eSchool Kerala. As it is night in India when UK schools are active, I had no learners beside me. Still, I had an excited learning adventure with my Skype colleagues.

I'm lucky. Two students from the twenty eight eager learners of Model Technical Higher Secondary School has promised to attend my FREE online sessions on Vedic Mathematics. Two more from two other schools in Kerala.

Akhil Iqbal is a student of Delta Study
Anjana Reghuraj is a student of Cochin Refineries School
Akhil Jayakumar and Edwin Antony Joe are from Model Technicl Higher Secondary School

Now I have four students ready to collaborate with peers abroad. These four will use Vedic Mathematics and GeoGebra effectively to master their school lessons. Once they have internalized the concepts, they will be teaching their peers across the globe. I hope to spart interest in GeoGebra here, in my country. These four students will be volunteers at HLW SKYPERS

They plan to connect with students of Anne Mirtschin in Australia first. These eTwinning students, from India and Australia, will collaborate online to teach other students across the globe. Each one teach one helps the teacher learners learn better!

The excitement of these four students is sure to spark interest in more learners from Kerala, India.

I started out with twenty eight students. Only four students have shown interest in this global commitment. They will be global leaders. They will show off their ePortfolio ensuring jet set success in their careers.

They will use Blogs, YouTube, Wikis, Glogster and a handful of tools to impact their success.

Smt. Saleena, Principal of MTHSS is preparing the school's VIII standard students to connect with HLW Skypers. Skype connections help students collaborate internationally: each one teach one. This ensures powerful learning.

On the first day, the Principal and students of MTHSS connected with Katherine Zablatnik in Austria and we outlined the project. Katherine Zablatnik and her students have agreed to collaborate with MTHSS students.

Benefits

Kerala students will share educational resources, become digital citizens.
Parents in Kerala will moderate the interactions. They become work at home entrepreneurs.

Lisa M. Dabbs is an Edutopia blogger. She wrote an article about an Argentinian teacher using blogs to support learning. "Blogging," she writes, "is a wonderful way to motivate our students to write. Students can share their stories, thoughts and reflections on their blogs. Writing for a real and global audience makes blogging an engaging and meaningful experience. Blogging has made a difference for my students. Their writing and reading skills have improved significantly."

The MTHSS students are learning Vedic Mathematics. They will use Maths Lab for Students to impart engaged, involved learning.

These students will launch themselves into cyberspace soon. They have connected with the students of Mike McGrother. The UK students will collaborate with Akhil and Edwin at an online interview.

The proactive Principal's ultimate aim is to develop student entrepreneurship in her wards. Success of this project will ensure more schools participating at Global Virtual Classrooms; one can only hope.

Social Networking for Education

Parents and teachers are weary of Generation Y using facebook.

My WikiEducator friend Sarah Stewart, who was my coach at FO2011 has written a blog about a safe social software that can be used at school / college. According to her Yammer is a walled in private garden.

I plan to use Yammer to train the school students I am training to collaborate with Annie Mirtschin's Australian students. This way I can gently introduce the benefits of Social Networking to the academic community.

Thank you for the post, Sarah; I shall use Yammer to get permission from PTA (Parents Teacher Association) to teach those students Social Networking.

Online sharing is exciting. We all enjoyed it. A couple of German students have asked me to train them in Vedic Mathematics. They plan to teach Vedic Mathematics to students in Kerala. WOW!!

Skype Act 1

Leonardo Project 2012 / 5th of May 2011, is an ambitious project by HLW Skypers. Kathereine Zablatnik from Austria arranged the cross national conversaton: Skype Videoconferencing with people from a dozen plus countries across the globe.

An Asian member of the team, I arranged a group of young girls to interact with Kathy's Austrian students. That day happened to be the birthday of Sania Lawrence, a ten year old girl in my team. We bought a cake, a pack of birthday candles and set it camera ready. After the niceties, we planned to invite the Austrian students to sing "Happy Birthday to Sania"; the little birthday girl on cloud 9.

As luck would have it, our internet failed exactly at the wrong right time and we were very disappointed. Sania, innocent of quirks of the net and eccentricities of our electric department, had boasted of it to her classmates, friends and relatives. When internet failed due to power failure, she was in tears.

Luckily, they could have the cake and eat it too.

Skype Act 2

When I heard that 14th May is the birthday of the daughter of a member of HLW Skypers, I grabbed the chance to sing "Happy Birthday" to that girl in USA. I had my 3G plugin connection to Internet and the laptop fully charged. I was not going to disappoint my young darlings, this time.

The time of the ceremony in America is early morning in India. Hence I got the parents to wake up little ones early; and had them ready and raring to sing.

Unfortunately, this time too, my team was disappointed. The birthday babe was not online!!

Thank you Murphy & Brigid for being there when those little darlings needed an audience.

They were so excited and looking forward to sing for "the Chechi" (elder sister in our mother tongue Malayalam) in America. As the darling Chechi failed to turn up, I needed an audience for them. Murphy and Brigid of HLW Skypers kindly obliged to listen to the children sing.

The songs were second bests; they had rehearsed only "Happy Birthday". I hope to let them sing and dance to Mike McGrother's students, on 25th May 2011.

The ice breaker to skype could be a singing party. At a party, children of all ages will connect naturally. It is easy to connect classrooms thereafter. I should know! It is Armando's singing that got me hooked to HLW Skypers!!

Hopefully, I'll get Armando too to sing in/on/at/over/under that CyberStage.

Questioning the Questions

Darsana Joseph has just joined Hello Little World Skypers. Her aim is to invite students abroad (of HLW Skypers at least) to make presentations on various topics she wants to learn. By engaging peers to collaborate, she plans to flatten the learning curve, make learning fun, and co-create learning objects to upload to their collaborative Wiki.

In the long run, participants can show their ePortfolio to their employers to secure hi-fly jobs; or show off to friends and families. Don't call it bragging. They would have earned their right to show off.

After all, an ePortfolio is a record of one's growth trajectory.

She invites attendees to work on the questions (not answers!!) using multimedia; she feels answers will evolve as the students explain the questions clearly to themselves. According to her, this era demands the capability to ask intelligent questions.

"Google for answers and distill the knowledge into wisdom" adds a smiling DJ.

Yet another definite advantage of cross national interaction is an ability to communicate across boundaries. Here is a hilarious video accenting the accents.

Learning the Learners

On Wednesday 04 May, I purposely didn't send the invitations to my regular attendees, nor did I inform and invite the students turned teachers, Amal Mariyadas and Darsana Joseph, I am nurturing online.

Result: Just two committed, dedicated online teachers were the only attendees to the session on 4th May. It was not a surprise, given the lack of faith in anything connected to Internet. George Machlan and Priscilla were the only attendees.

George Machlan is an excellent UNteacher. "Anyone can teach and everyone should" is George's dictum. He has launched the very first "ONLINE OLYMPICS" where English language games are played to perfection to compete. It is designed to help everyone win. It is a win-win-win deal, George has conceived. I wish him all the best in his endeavour. There is a lot any teacher can learn from this ex-centric online adventurer.

I got Five Stars from George!!

He has given me five stars. Thank you George. Thank you very much indeed. Online teachers have to support each other to make the platform a winner. I know, I can't hold a candle to you. But your approval has made my day. Online teachers have to perform and accumulate accolades from their peers to make their digital footprints, show credible credentials.

Reflective learning: After the lesson visit

Monday's session was conspicuous by the absence of Amal & Darsana. Due to electricity failure at their place, both called and informed me the problem. In spite of their absence, I played the videos chosen by them, as their proxy. Luckily Lynne Lehmer was there to support me.

As usual Priscilla took an active role, contributing to the conversation.

We had arranged a Google Docs interaction where all participants could write down their Six Hats Thinking on Google Spreadsheet, I didn't launch it. The idea was to help the school students practice online collaboration. Hence it was postponed.

Further to the presentation on 27 March 2011 by Amal and Darsana, we were not able to hold our regular session on Friday the 29th April, thanks to the self-defeating, anti-people "Harthal" imposed on law abiding citizens of Kerala by the Government of Kerala(sic)!

A Harthal is an anti-people weapon used by political vandals and hooligans. At a Harthal all business and daily life come to a grinding halt. On 29th the Harthal was called by the Government itself. Public held to ransom where even the Police, servile servants of the Government, wouldn't raise a lathi to defend the hapless taxpaying citizen from the inhuman cruelty of Harthal mongers.

Karl Marx must be turning in his grave. Sorry folks for our missing a beat on 29th.

On 2 May 2011 we use "Six Thinking Hats" at a practical, collaborative ideation session. We ideate on 'connecting classrooms' using all the six hats. We learn collaborate using Twitter & Google Docs, to master these tools hands on. Come, join us on this exciting learning journey.

Reflective learning on our presentation on 27th March.

Amal Mariyadas used animations in his slideshow. Animations demand more bandwidth and speed. Due this bottleneck, sound and animation were not in sync. Animations distract. Do not animate your PowerPoint slides
Amal was reading the text on his slides. Attendees could read the message faster with their eyes than Amal could by reading the text aloud. Self talking slides made Amal redundant. Keep just the points on the slide and explain it in the presenter's words.
Both Amal and Darsana spoke with the 'heavy south Indian' accent. I need to train them on English phonetics. When in Rome, do as Romans do. Learn Global English.

A promise to my presenters
Presenters also get FREE training in English phonetics. South Indian's can readily recognize themselves mirrored in the duo's accent. Do follow them as they develop their English language skills, conversational abilities and explanatory power by interacting with their peers across the globe, collaborating at Connecting Classrooms.

Reflective learning: After the lesson visit

On Wednesday 8:00 pm IST, 25 April 2011, I held a FREE PUBLIC CLASS. This blog is my reflection of our collaborative learning.

On listening to the recording I have the following observations:

My family had the TV switched on too loud. As I was conditioned to it, I didn't notice it. Listening to the recording did. Next time, I shall close all doors before I sit down at the session.
During the session, one attendee, Lynne had a phone call. She had not muted her microphone. Her telephone conversation too was broadcast to the class. We should mute our microphone after use
Sachpreet Kaur: Came late and wanted someone to fill him on what he missed.
Shameem came late and apologised for the delay
Amal, a presenter, although knew his role, failed to turn up in time
Punctuality is a courtesy we need to practice. No one should waste another persons time.
Priscilla and Lynne were active listeners and tried their best to contribute. Thank you. Others were passive. The trainer has use techniques to improve attendee participation.
King can do no wrong. Online teachers shouldn't make typos in class. I made a few mistakes as I had no facilitator to support me. I personally could not type the text in notepad, correct the typos, copy the text and paste it into the Wiziq chatbox; juggling too many balls. A class will be effective if supported well by co-facilitators. I must have a facilitator to complement my training.
Priscilla's queries and questions went unanswered, her feedback unappreciated due to presenter's shortcomings.
Recording will never have sound and video synchronization due to Internet bandwidth and processor speed problems. Hence, people who were not at the real-life session may feel frustrated to connect chat, audio and video to follow the class
Each session should begin with a training on how to use Wiziq tools as newbies may not be able to participate due to technical snags

Amal called me, right after the Skype Conference, with this query: “ How can I gift my friends the glass paintings I showed them during my chat? What are the formalities to send gifts abroad? How much will it cost me to send it to them?

He challenged me to arrange a brainstorming session to implement his idea successfully.

Electrified by his challenge, The Thinking Club arranged a Skype conference to generate ideas using Amal’s original idea as a stepping stone. The purpose was to include more players to make Amal’s offer benefit his friends, family and school.

Darsana, Amritraj, Ann Mary, Amal’s parents and friends, and some online facilitators I trained joined the ideation session. Participants typed their suggestions and ideas into Skype’s chat.

On Wednesday 20 Apr 2011, we went on cybper picnic, a collaborative learning journey on how to use Vokle. We are eager to learn how we can use this as an Online Teacher, helping our learners collaborate with the world at large.

I used Camstudio to record the online conference as Vokle has not yet started their own proprietory event recorder. I Googled how to learn how to! I wouldn't have learnt it, had not Armando invited me to this Vokle (mis)adventure. Thanks again, Armando, Kathy and Alex.

As I was using Camstudio for the first time, I didn't know it records only screen by default. Hence audio was not recorded. Camstudio made an avi file.

Using Windows Movie Maker, I cut the video short, and added some music. (That's a blessing for the audience. Our picnic chat would have bored anyone other than this foursome)

Thank you Armando for hosting the conference, Kathy for your support and bringining in your friend Alex. The glow on the face of Alex Jr. is the glow of happiness and peace, one of the happy results of technology empowering all of us. Thanks to Vokle for offering this FREE platform.

As an alumnus of the college, I too was there to harvest the produce planted by the Nature Club of Sacred Heart College.

Rev. Fr. Prasant Palakkappilly, the Principal asked me to help the Alumni network grow. As an Alumnus of the college, I took up the challenge. The college already had scattered groups at Google. Father wanted to start a Facebook group and grow the Alumni network 2000 strong in 100 days.

Using Facebook, I was pleasantly surprised and thrilled at heart to network with old and new friends scattered across the globe.

I have requested to the Principal to hold a Skype conference with the Alumni. I plan to use the latent energy of the Alumni to benefit the current students. I am arranging group discussions where juniors and seniors meet at Skype. Principal is only too happy about the project. All the experience and expertise of the elders can be tapped by the current students using Skype. As a Wiki person, I intend to train as many members of Sacred Heart College as possible in Wiki skills.

Enthusiastic and vibrant, Principal has enrolled 40 students to Open Education Resources training. He himself has joined too.

Kerala Police registered its own Social Media Accounts at Twitter, FaceBook, Orkut and YouTube. Police duty is to outwit the culprits. Social Media is used by crooks. So police have to be there to prevent crime.

Social media is used by our innocent new generation. We are duty bound to police and protect our youth from harm that comes from their (and our) ignorance. It is our moral imperative to master Web 3.0 that our students use.

In the digital world, we are separate but united. Our identities contain the group identity and the individual identity. While group identity reflects the togetherness of a community experience, the individual identity reflects differences between individuals. Differences arise because of community members’ different origins and existing opinions, and also develop through the interactions between individuals.

We participate at online interactions; engage directly in conversations, reflections and other activities within the community. We produce physical and conceptual artifacts – words, concepts, methods, stories, documents, links to resources - that reflect our shared experience and around which we organize our participation.

Our engagements can be oriented towards:

Organizing meetings
Having open-ended conversations
Working on projects
Working with content
Acquiring access to expertise
Maintaining relationships
Stimulating unique individual contributions
Cultivating a community
Serving a context

At such engagements, we can share a wealth of information and tips on teaching and reaching online.

There is no worked-out wisdom about e-Teaching, e-Learning or Social Media tools that anyone can give you as the final answer. This is all so new, it is still being worked out – no one knows exactly where it is going and how it will all turn out.

The only way to learn about social media is to participate in it and learn iteratively through your own experience. Just plunge in. Those who do not dive in will not be able to learn from others about this phenomenon as it is too new – you have to experience it to be able to begin to understand it and how much it is changing our experience of the world around us.

Although it can seem risky or inefficient to learn this way, it is actually more risky not to play. The world is going into this means of communication, with or without you. Eventually it will reshape all of our relationships.

I found a simple slideshow telling the world why we all need a PLN. It is by Sarah Stewart, my friend and mentor. It doesn't mean I am biased in favour of her. I would have used this even if she were an alien from Mars. Reason: It is well worth its digital weight in gold. All teachers should have a Personal Learning Network, because life is too short to learn it all and make the same mistakes others have made before you.

Last week I was at a webinar by Diane Ravitch, at Elluminate: I am a concerned parent trying to understand what went wrong with my children's education. As I listened, I could see parallels between education in Kerala and America.

Our education system, designed during and for the Industrial era, is failing at the digital era. Reason: Students use today's empowering technology. But teachers still cling to the bygone tech, continue to use chalk and talk, preaching from the stage.

Our education system is change averse. The consumers in education, students, have no say in what they consume. Our self serving education system decides, teaches, certifies and claims what a wonderful job the system does. Self serving, just like politics across the world.

How come there are no teachers from Kerala listening to the ideas of the future? Wikimedia Foundation is set to establish an Indian chapter, the Malayalam Wiki projects community, one wonders how many school / college teachers in Kerala know about Wikis, social networking and Web 2.0 goodies. Our educational policy is designed by politicians with their hidden agenda, not by students, parents and teachers.

Teachers should lead change, lest they become obsolete. They have the power and capability. But ideas of a bygone era rules the mindset. So the teachers continue to teach from their top heavy platforms.

Teachers, please light your candle first. Your learners need role models.

Last month Darsana Joseph held a seminar at her school to invite Nirmala Higher Secondary School to Wiki.

In order to facilitate online collaboration among teachers in Kerala, I plan to connect my classmates at FO2010 for a Skype Conference with Darsana and her team. That way, the social anxiety of the students would be overcome and the Facilitators and students in Kerala, my state in India, can take a lead in Online Learning.

Possibly I will help Darsana and team to connect with some of my classmates at FO2010. That way I can show off my eminent friends at FO2010. Watch a movie again and we notice a lot that we missed the first time we watched it. I noticed the power of coordination and facilitation in action as I reviewed the session: Learned the art of introductions as Lorna introduced herself and her team players, how each contributed their might for successful facilitation.

As the Speaker of the event, Lorna was the host: she sounded authoritative yet soothing; she put the learners at ease. She invited Lyn Blair, Sarah Stewart and Sharon Schindler into her team.

Sarah opened up with giggles, smiles and laughter. Sharon chipped in with claps as Sarah began, guiding everyone on lesson one of facilitation: Get involved, invite others to get involved.

She invited attendees to raise doubts, critique and points that need elaboration. In the process of learning, bouquets and brickbats are welcome. A continual learning program requires feedback from the audience. Gracefully, she handed the microphone over to Lyn who explained the roles of Lyn and Lorna: Team players in successful learning for the teacher and the taught.

Lorna invited the candidates to raise their questions on blog, email group or wiki complementing Sarah’s invitations for wiki discussion threads. Wiki is the better option to avoid too many mails shuttling back and forth.

The session started with how to use Elluminate’s whiteboard and tools. No one presumes the whole class know how to use technology to teach. This reminded me of my own oversight at my first online teaching session at wiziq. I had presumed the attendees knew the tools! They didn’t ask me to explain the tools before I started my session. Instead, they just closed the window and walked out, I later learned.

Coach Carole was a bit late. Without losing her tempo, the speaker smoothly welcomed Carole to the happy go lucky team of learners all: another lesson in facilitating.

The class proceeded smoothly about Connections with people and resources. How experienced bloggers share and grow their experiences by involving other bloggers through informed opinions, comments and by following others online. “How to comment?” asked a learner and Coach Carole stepped in. Carole was a fine example on classroom coordination among peers. Carol complemented Lyn’s statement perfectly.

Carole continued on how to make a community of practise, comment to draw attention, make connections using blog and grow the connections.

I liked the idea that we should be connecting up with people from diverse fields, not only with those with the same interest as ourselves. The more varied our interests, the wider our perspectives. A photographer uses sharp focus lens and wide angle lens as situation demands. Likewise, ideas flow free when we think out of the box.

Intrigued, I spent some time researching Coach Carole. She is an experienced facilitator! At the session, she sounded like just another student trying to clarify a point. On researching her, I found, she intentionally role-played to help everyone. Thank you, Carole. Well done. I learned a lot from you too.

I could see Coach Carole typing - her type balloon was highlighted. But the wise speaker offered her microphone. Knowing who could contribute, involving the right person in the discussion to bring in a fresh perspective etc are qualities of a world class facilitator.

Carole, experienced in online facilitation noticed Lyn’s microphone request, finished her piece and gracefully handed it over. Sarah took over from Lyn. Carole and Folke continued to contribute using emoticons, applause and thumbs up, showing how to keep ones attention riveted to the discussion.

Sarah invited everyone to explore opportunities to connect with bloggers from various fields, not just with those having similar interests. It reminded me of a party I attended. I met four classmates there. We stood in a circle reminiscing about our college days. We all lost a wonderful opportunity to network with the dozens of new people at the party! Thank you Sarah, now I see a party as a godsend opportunity to make connections and network. Your lesson has sunk deep in.

Like at TV interviewers, each member asked leading questions, filled in the blanks, invited deeper discussion through prompting effectively learning and teaching facilitation. All in all, this experience has taught me a lot: on netiquette, how to be a successful person and a how to be a Facilitator worth emulating.

An exciting time indeed: the Seminar at TDTTI, Mattancherry, Cochin 682 002, Kerala, India was a fabulous experience for me. All the fifteen trainee teachers have shown interest in getting Wikibuddy Certification. It seems, I will have to make arrangements to install the necessary Networking hardware, download training materials and get the computer lab Wiki ready. It can be done, given the enthusiasm shown by the Principal, staff and students.

ICT Policy of Government of Kerala requires all schools to create their School Wiki.

students of Our Ladies Convent Girls Higher Secondary School, (Address: Thoppumpady, Cochin 682005, Kerala, India), learn why they should learn to use Wiki & Web 2.0 goodies.

Amal Mariyadas, a 12 year old student trained by me, gave them online English Language lessons using Skype. He also used white-board and other tools available at www.wiziq.com to teach them.

The best performers were given computers so that they can continue to learn online, courtesy eSchool Kerala.
